Building Firms Win Efficiency Accreditation

Three Irish contractors have attained accreditation for internationally-recognised quality and environmental management standards, thanks to help from WYG Ireland.

Glasgiven Contracts, Felix O'Hare & Co and Connolly & Fee reached the standards which will enable them to reduce costs and gain competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Ray Moore, Group Managing Director of WYG Ireland, said his firm is seeing greater demand from businesses looking to reduce their impact on the environment and improve quality.

"Environmental risks, such as waste management, waste reduction and pollution prevention, need to be actively managed to ensure an improvement in performance," he said.

"We have worked with hundreds of contractors throughout Northern Ireland to improve their operations and achieve accreditation for a range of internationally-recognised standards."

He said WYG's in-depth knowledge of the ISO9001 and 14001 standards and the Northern Ireland building industry has enabled the firm to help its latest three clients achieve quality and environmental compliance efficiently and effectively.

WYG Ireland's Environmental Management team, supported the development and implementation of an integrated Environmental Management System (EMS) for each client, and all three building contractors were able to achieve ISO14001 accreditation at the first attempt.

The EMS will enable each organisation to reduce their carbon footprint and improve the management of their environmental risks, such as waste and pollution.

This improved management will result in significant cost-savings with respect to consumption, waste and recycling and a potential reduction in public liability insurance costs.

The team also supported Glasgiven Contracts and Connolly and Fee to achieve the ISO 9001 quality management standard.

Gerard McClelland, Contracts Manager at Glasgiven Contracts, said: "We greatly appreciate the support of the WYG EMS team which helped us to analyse and monitor our quality and environmental systems in our journey towards ISO9001 and ISO14001 Accreditation.

"Their knowledge of the systems ensured our compliance with current legislation both in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

"Ultimately this will lead to greater opportunities for our company at a time when the procurement of construction projects is much more competitive."

Shane Connolly, Contracts Manager, Connolly & Fee Ltd, said: "It will improve supplier relationships and our control of documentation. It will help to reduce costs as well as improve Connolly & Fee's awareness of its impact on the environment."

Fionnuala Magee, Felix O'Hare & Co Ltd, said: "Now that we have received this accreditation we can easily identify aspects of our business that impact on the environment and understand those environmental laws that are relevant."
