Strabane Regeneration Walkabout

Construction News Image
Local representatives in Strabane have highlighted a number of necessary remedial works in the town, as part of an overall regeneration strategy.

Councillors met with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, Roads Service and Planning and others on a walkabout, which started at Abercorn Square, through Market Street, Butcher Street, Bridge Street, Main Street and Railway Road.

"Those present highlighted issues which required remedial or development work, particularly in relation to the master plan for the town centre development," said a council spokeswoman.

The general appearance of the town, particularly in relation to some of the condition of footpaths, was commented on.

One major consideration was the obvious vegetation growing from derelict buildings, particularly in Lower Main Street, the council said.

In Bridge Street, discussions centred on tackling the overgrown vegetation at one of the key entrances to the town and the potential of improving vehicular access to the Waterwall.

All those present reviewed the current car park premium within the town, and looked at potential opportunity sites. In Railway Road delegates saw the central need to develop stronger links between the ASDA site and the town centre commercial sites, according to the council.

All of the comments will be forwarded for consideration within the town centre master plan.

Chief Executive of Strabane District Council, Philip Faithfull, said: "The walkabout highlighted many issues which required remedial action.

"All agencies will work to try and improve the town centre and this co-operation between Strabane District Council, the Chamber and other agencies is to be welcomed," he said.

"All are committed to the Town Centre Masterplan and to improving Strabane town centre. It is hoped that funding opportunities will emerge to continue this development activity of the town centre."
