Mayor of Ards Billy Montgomery has cut the first sod on the site of the new £1m community centre in Carrowdore, Co Down.

The new centre, which will amount to some 5,070 square feet of space for local residents, will provide meeting and seminar rooms, as well as a main hall for larger events. Its design is based on the community centre which opened recently in Donaghadee.


"A community centre for Carrowdore has been on the cards for quite some time, so it is a pleasure to see work get under way," said Mr Montgomery.

"Like its sister centre in Donaghadee, the building will provide modern facilities with a high standard of finish. I look forward to its completion when I'm sure residents of the village and the surrounding area will start putting it to very good use," he added.

The centre is expected to be completed by July 2010.
