Research aimed at boosting the development of extensive land at the Glen Road in west Belfast has been announced by NI Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie.

Speaking about the potential re-development of the area, Ms Ritchie said: "As minister responsible for regeneration, it is my job to take the lead on this important and exciting development zone."

The Minister said she wants to "open up the full potential" for the re-development of the west Belfast are.

"I am convinced that, with a joined-up approach by government and landowners, the full economic and social potential of the lands can be released," she said.

The research study commissioned by the Department for Social Development and the Strategic Investment Board, is being carried out by consultants GVA Grimley, working with Faber Maunsell.

Over the immediate period ahead, the consultants will hear about plans already in place or under consideration from existing landowners, individuals, companies or other organisations with long term lease arrangements.

They will then consider how an agreed approach to the regeneration of the Glen Road could benefit all parties.

Ms Ritchie said: "There are substantial pieces of land around the Glen Road. They have the potential to transform the western fringe of Belfast with new housing and commercial development.

"I want to unlock the value in the land to benefit this part of our capital city. In these difficult economic times it is important for government to stimulate and promote investment."

The Minister also said the study process would not halt or delay the active plans of landowners on the Glen Road.
