£4.6m Road Investment For Stranbane Revealed

Over £4.6m is to be invested in Strabane roads.

Making the announcement, Transport Minister Conor Murphy said significant progress had been made on the A5 Western Key Transport Corridor in the area.

Four preferred routes for this road were announced last November.

Mr Murphy said his department would now been sanctioning the widening and realignment of the Berryhill Road on the approach to Artigarvan from Strabane and the resurfacing of the A5 Mulvin Road, south of Victoria Bridge.

Road Service's Divisional Roads Manager Pat Doherty welcomed the planned investment in local transport and safety measures in the Strabane Council area, which includes traffic calming, collision remedial, pedestrian measures, cycling measures and safer routes to schools.

Other schemes which will be taken forward in the Strabane Council Area this year include the replacement of a bridge on the Taboe Road near Donemana, the upgrade and replacement of the traffic signal equipment at the Melmount Road, Bradley Way, Urney Road junction, central reservations and traffic islands on the Derry Road in Strabane, and junction improvements at the Maghernageeragh Road/ Carn Road junction near Killeter.

Mr Doherty highlighted some of the schemes already completed in 2008/09. These included resurfacing of the A5 Melmount Road south of Sion Mills, resurfacing of the road and footways in Ballycolman Estate and Springhill Park in conjunction with DSD's Neighbourhood Renewal Programme, sightline improvements at Berryhill Road, Barron Road junction, pedestrian crossing facilities in Ballymagorry and at Upper Main Street Strabane and repairs to the bridge on Corramore Road at Cranagh.
