Bridge Works Announced By Sligo Council

Sligo Borough Council has announced plans to carry out extensive repair and upgrade works on a number of bridges in the region.

Improvements are proposed for the Markievicz Bridge - also known as New Bridge - at Kempten Promenade in Rathquarter, and at Kennedy Parade in Abbeyquarter North and in the Garvoge River in Sligo City.

Repair works to existing bridge, piers and abutments will include scour prevention measures in the Garvoge River, a council spokesman said.


The existing arched bridge structure will also be illuminated.

Plans to construct two new bridge piers on the upstream side of the existing structure in the Garvoge River, have also been revealed.

As well as the construction of a new independently supported footbridge on the upstream side of the existing bridge.

Minor modifications to J F Kennedy Parade and Kempten Promenade to provide bank seats for the new footbridge and the realignment of the foot ways and parapets, will be carried out, in addition to minor ancillary works associated with services.

The proposed development are to be completed under protected structure no. 177 as set out in the Sligo and Environs Development Plan 2004-2010.
