CIF Calls For Pay Cuts

The body representing Irish builders is in the Labour Court today to demand a 10% pay cut in the industry.

According to the Construction Industry Federation, a cut in wages is necessary to retain competitiveness in the industry and secure jobs.

Federation bosses have said 7,000 jobs are being lost in the construction sector each month.


Trade unions have been accused of failing to accept economic realities by continuing to seek pay hikes.

The country's largest union SIPTU has lambasted the CIF's claims and accused employers of having a "brass neck" in calling for a pay cut, considering the massive profits they have made in recent years.

CIF members have continued to boycott cuts in government spending. The body has said capital spending project are necessary to stimulate the ailing sector.
