Derry In Focus At Regeneration Event

Local people hold the key to shaping the regeneration of Derry, according to Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie.

Ms Ritchie was speaking at a three-day event focused on developing the region.

The 'Future Search' Event entitled 'Changing Patterns - Changing Outcomes: An internationally recognised City Region, harnessing its potential for the betterment of all' has brought together people from all backgrounds to help plan the regeneration of the local area.

Young people, community members, ministers and others have engaged with the overall aim to create a single plan for the city's regeneration.


Ms Ritchie said: "The regeneration of our towns, cities, and neighbourhoods is, and must remain, an important priority. This event will give local people an opportunity to engage directly with decision makers.

"My department has played a central role in setting the agenda for, and delivering urban renewal. Our track record includes the redevelopment of some 750 sites including 600 buildings in Derry.

"However we must build on those achievements and I expect to see significant progress on existing projects including Fort George, Ebrington and the new foot and cycle bridge."

The Minister added: "Local people must shape and share in the benefits of regeneration. Therefore, I would encourage everyone at the event or through the Future Search website to influence how Derry will develop over the next 25 years."
