July Opening For Ikea's Dublin Store

Construction News Image
A new €110m Ikea superstore will open in Dublin this July, the company has confirmed.

The 30,500 square-metre site has already been developed to an extent, with the completion subject to an upgrade at the Ballymun junction.

Work on this road was a condition laid down by the planning authority.

Ikea previously expressed frustration at the hold-up in progress.

Chief Executive Anders Dahlvig told the Irish Times: "I don't think we have ever had a store ready and operative that has to stand idle. We invested in all this infrastructure, we put millions and millions of euro into this and then we have the frustration of having this long negotiation with the road authority."

Ikea has sought a guarantee from the National Roads Authority on the M50 completion date so the decision can be made when to launch the new store.

The authority raised concerns about the traffic flow around the new store, when it opposed the scheme in 2007.

NRA documents released under the Freedom of Information Act state its "board agreed that it is not possible to guarantee a completion date and that should Ikea wish to accelerate the upgrade works at Juction 4 (Ballymum), that this should be done at no expense to the NRA".

However, the NRA has reportedly said it will note raise objections to the store opening after June, even if the road works are not finished.

The junction upgrade is estimated to have cost the taxpayer between €10m and €20m.
