Northern Ireland Transport Minister Conor Murphy has been on site to view progress on the construction of a new £14.6m rail station in Newry.

Work started in February this year on the new station and 300 space Park and Ride facility, which are on schedule to be finished by autumn 2009.

Clive Bradberry, Infrastructure Executive at Translink, said: "We are progressing well and many of our passengers are following the developments on the new station with great interest.

"This modern new accessible facility will offer superior levels of comfort and convenience to both the local community and also the many visitors coming to Newry."

Mr Bradberry said: "It will include all the features our customers can expect including comfortable waiting areas, covered platform canopys, electronic passenger information screens, CCTV, a parent and baby room, passenger lifts and a bus interchange facility.

"In addition our employees are also looking forward to enhanced facilities which include a new ticket office."

He added: "We are seeing more people using the train thanks to the significant investment and enhancements made in our services.

"I would like thank the Minister for taking this opportunity to visit Newry station to view the progress to date.

"I would also like to thank our passengers, employees and local business people for their ongoing support. We very much look forward to welcoming them to their new station in the future."
