€40m Limerick Retail Development Suspended

A €40m retail development proposed for the heart of Limerick city has stalled indefinitely after an appeal was filed with An Bord Pleanana, despite the scheme already being given the green light by the local planning authority.

Opposition was lodged with the appeals body a mere two days before the deadline closed.

Limerick City planners had earlier granted approval for the five-storey 60,000 square foot retail and office development.


The development, located on a site between Glentworth Street, Lower Catherine Street and Mallow Street, is set to create 200 much-needed construction jobs.

The Catherine Street Partnership consortium, which is behind the scheme, said there is a lot of local support for the project.

Noel Harrington, a member of the consortium, said the development would play an important part in helping the regeneration of the city.

Limerick City Council has already zoned the site for regeneration and conservation works.

Well received by local business groups, the project is designed to rejuvenate derelict buildings in the area, and deter anti-social behaviour.

Award-winning architects Murray O Laoire produced the lay out for the scheme.
