Killeen Welcomes Farming Welfare Scheme

Construction News Image
Junior Agriculture Minister Tony Killeen has confirmed that the government will commence payments under the 2008 Suckler Welfare Scheme.

"Payments of €80 per cow will continue on a rolling basis in respect of the 2008 born calves, as additional animals become eligible," said Minister Killeen.

"These payments will be worth some €77 million in respect of 2008 born calves for the 53,000 applicants in the scheme and payments will continue into 2009.

"It is expected that up to €33 million will be paid this year, and a further €44 million paid in 2009 in respect of cows that calved in 2008," said the Clare TD.

Mr Killeen encouraged County Clare's applicants to continue to complete and return their forms as quickly as possible, and for those making their returns on-line to do so also.

"It is about two things; High Standards of Animal Welfare and Improved Breeding. The emphasis is on doing the basic things correctly.

"It concentrates on the key events of calving, disbudding, castration and weaning. Clare farmers who participate in the scheme are expected to follow best practice at all these stages. They are also expected to send back information on the key Animal Events," explained the Junior Minister.

"The ultimate aim is to produce a weanling that is healthier and of a higher quality standard which will better suit consumer needs and award the farmer producer with premium prices," he added.
