Corus Pick Up Top Tele Award

Corus, the international steel company, has received a commendation for its Ireland businesses in the Health and Safety category of this year's Belfast Telegraph Northern Ireland Business Awards.

The Award has recognised the sustained and ongoing commitment of Corus to the Health and Safety of all employees and visitors to the various Corus sites across Ireland and especially so at its major steel processing centre in Lisburn.

The Lisburn site has an excellent record of keeping their employees safe during the last five years and has been accredited with the very high standard of Safety accreditation in the ISRS Level 8, one of the only companies in Ireland to achieve this.

Chris Conway, director of Corus in Ireland said: "Our management team and employees have been totally committed to the continuous improvement of both the health and the safety of everyone working and visiting our sites.

"We have succeeded because everyone has been involved in making improvements to safety, from all parts of the business.

"Recorded benefits to the company in the last year alone include improved performance and productivity, better service and delivery reliability for customers, cost savings, reduced absence levels and insurance claims and most importantly improved safety for our employees," he added.

Corus also take the health of their employees in Ireland equally seriously. Recent initiatives in Corus to improve the health of employees have included the setting up of a new gym to help employees to take more regular exercise and regular opportunities for employees to hear guest speakers on various health topics.

Many of the 120 employees across Ireland took up the opportunity to take part in a Cardiac Risk Assessment organised by the Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke Association and funded by Corus.

This tested cholesterol, blood glucose levels, blood pressure and carbon monoxide levels for smokers. Several of the Corus employees were able to recognize potential health risks and make lifestyle changes, including using the gym at the Corus Lisburn site to improve their health.
