Water in the area will be supplied from a tanker at the carpark in Ballinahown from today. Water will be available at the carpark in Ballinahown from 9am to 9pm each day thereafter until further notice, according to the council.
Council officials have reminded consumers this water should not be used for drinking unboiled; food preparation; brushing of teeth; or bathing children.
The following guidance was issued:
- Boil water by bringing water to a rolling, vigorous boil and allow to cool. Cover and store in a refrigerator or cold place. Water from the hot tap is not safe to drink. Domestic water filters will not guarantee that water is safe to drink.
- Great care must be taken with boiled water to avoid burns and scalds as accidents can easily happen, especially with children.
- Make ice from water prepared for drinking.
- Use water prepared for drinking when preparing foods that will not be cooked (e.g. washing salads).
Westmeath County Council said it will update consumers as soon the water supply has been reinstated.
An apology has been issued on behalf of the council, highlighting the inconvenience caused to consumers.
The council has pledged to reinstate the water supply "as speedily as possible".
