Answers Sought Over Mullusk Landfill Death

The family of a man found dead at a Mullusk landfill site have called for a full investigation into his death.

Relatives of David Leyland said they want to find out the cause of the tragedy, so it can never happen again.

The 23-year-old went missing from the Biffa site, where he was working, on Thursday evening.

His body was found on Friday night.

Mr Leyland's brother has demanded someone from Biffa comes forward and offers an explanation of how the tragedy occurred.

Ken Leyland said: "This should never happen again on any other site,

"I want Biffa - the boys at the very top - not to try to cover anything up or hide anything.

"Come clean and then sort yourselves out and make sure this never happens again."

A spokesperson for Biffa Waste said all the workers at the site had been "shocked by the dreadful events".

The firm passed on its condolences to the Leyland family.

Biffa is yet to establish a cause of the tragedy, but has said it will work closely with police, as well as undertaking its own investigation.

The Health and Safety Executive has confirmed it will carry out an investigation and post mortem examination.

Mr Leyland, who was recently married, was last seen at 2pm on Thursday.

A major search was launched that evening but later called off due to hazardous conditions.

This included lying water from the recent flooding.

The police-led search resumed on Friday morning, ending at 9pm that night.

Newtownabbey Area Commander Chief Inspector Paula Hilman said the PSNI was first alerted at about 7.50pm on Thursday and a search started immediately.

It involved the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, a PSNI helicopter and a dog unit.
