Limerick Firm's €Multi-Million Chicago Project Planned

Limerick-based Chieftain Construction is to build a €63.7m apartment and hotel complex in Chicago.

The firm is currently seeking planning permission for the Grand Central project, which will encompass 500 apartments and a 200-bedroom hotel.

The mixed-use development will stretch over two tower blocks, which will both peak at a dizzying 25 storeys.

The scheme will be situated close to the Chicago Spire, constructed by fellow Irishman Garrett Kelleher.


Chieftain is already involved in other developments in the city, including a 333-unit residential development, called Lexington Park.

Work on the two-block project is well underway, with 23 of the 33 storeys already built.

However, back home, the firm has halted a €140m mixed-use development at Rockey Road, Ballynerrin, which has already been granted planning permission. It is now expected this project will not commence until early next year.

The green light has been given for 481 new homes, including a neighbourhood centre incorporating shops, offices and a creche.

According to Project Manager Declan White a third of the houses had already been built.
