€1.25b Dublin Central Asked To Revise Plans

Dublin's planning authority has requested the proposed €1.25bn Dublin Central scheme addresses "inherent design challenges", before it gets the go-ahead.

The developer behind the project, Chartered Land, has been asked to submit details on 14 aspects of its redevelopment plan to Dublin City Council.

The planned work is to take place of the site of the former Carlton cinema on O'Connell Street.

The eventual Dublin Central scheme is to house around 100 apartments, with an equal number of retail outlets. The project also plans to incorporate a sloping public park, over the city's skyline, which will give a panoramic view of the Fair City.


It has been reported that the council's main bone of contention is related to this public space.

Chartered Land has been asked to address design challenges posed by this phase, and ensure appropriate public access to the facility.

The planning authority has expresses the need for a design that is "sympathetic, restrained, formal and classic proportions expressed in contemporary idiom".

The council has also raised concerns about the general preservation of O'Connell Street, by asking any anchor tenants on the street to respect the historic feel of the area, and to use more stone clad façades.

Planners have also sought more provision of ground-floor eateries and cafes in Moore Street, with a selection of ethnic foods incorporated.
