Technology Job Losses In Shannon

Forty-eight jobs are to go in Shannon, after the announcement that a technology firm will close.

Buffalo Technology Ireland, who assembles, tests and distributes devices used for storing information, said its Irish business had made a loss in the past two years, and as a consequence business was no longer feasible.

It has therefore decided to withdraw from operations at its Shannon location.


The company said that market demand was now concentrated in the UK, Germany and Nordic countries. Buffalo's business is continuing to grow in southern Europe, while trading is still developing in the eastern part of the continent as well as the Middle East.

Talks have begun with staff on redundancy packages, and the firm has also consulted Shannon Development on the withdrawal of the business.

Further job losses are also predicted in the area with the closure of Woco Irish Rubber Components plant in Carrick-on-Shannon, it is expected 41 jobs could go.

The manufacturing company has been in the Co Leitrim town since the 1970s. Businesses operations are now being moved to Germany.
