Limerick Council Asks Residents To Pick Up Graffiti Bill

Council officials in Limerick have told victims of graffiti vandals that the local environment department will not pick up the bill for the clean-up operation.

Limerick city residents will instead have to remove the damage to their area at their own cost.

At the weekend South Circular Road residents were targeted by vandals who damaged stone walls in the area.

However, Limerick City Council, whose budget is already stretched by similar issues in the city, claimed that because the damaged walls, in South Circular Road, were outward facing, residents must pay for the removal from their own pockets.


The council is expected to post letters to affected residents requesting, "if possible", the graffiti should be cleaned up privately.

Costs for graffiti removal can reach up to €1,000 per time.

One dismayed city councillor has branded the decision "crazy". Fine Gael's Jim Long said if the residents are to pay for the removal, funding should be put in place to install CCTV in the South Circular area.

Senior Executive Officer at Limerick City Council's Environmental Department Jean Ryan said, under the Litter Act 1997, any damage to private properties would be remedied by the council asking residents to clean it up themselves.

A high volume of graffiti damage is also being experienced in parts of Galway city, where removal company Clean Slate has pledged to tackle the increasing problem.
