The Coleraine area is set to benefit from a £3.8m roads investment, which was unveiled by the DRD Minister last night.
Conor Murphy announced the multi-million pound strategy at a meeting with Coleraine Council, where the Minister also discussed on-going projects in the borough.
Minister Murphy said: "It is proposed to provide a continuous footway on the southern side of the Garvagh Road in Kilrea between the Northern Bank and Blackrock Road. A combined footway/cycleway on the eastern side of Dunderg Road to connect the existing footway/cycleway provision on Dunhill Road to the village at Macosquin is also planned.
"It is also proposed to extend the cycle-path on Sea Road, Castlerock, to the level crossing. There are further proposals to carry out carriageway improvements at A29 Atlantic Road in the vicinity of ‘Mathers Cross’ and at U36 Ballymacrea Upper."
The Minister also noted the increased budget given to his department, as well as the large spending plan the Roads Service has in place for the next three years.
Discussing plans for Coleraine, Mr Murphy said: "This year in the Coleraine area we plan to spend £2.4million on various projects. Carriageway resurfacing schemes will be carried out on A54 Agivey Road at Droghed, B190 Belraugh Road at Gortnamoyagh, and B207 Moneybrannon Road at Crossgar.
"Footway resurfacing schemes will be carried out at Mussenden Road, Blackthorn Court, Tullans Park and Maple Drive. A surface dressing programme totalling 35km will be carried out on minor rural roads and micro surfacing will be carried out at a number of urban locations. Drainage schemes are planned for Craigahulliar Road and Hopefield Road."
Speaking yesterday, Roads Service's Principal Engineer Jim Campbell said there were significant challenges to be faced.
Mr Campbell said: "The Investment Strategy anticipates a large programme of trunk road improvements over the next ten years, with investment totalling £3.1billion. Roads Service is currently considering how this work will be programmed and delivered."
