€11 Million For Galway Works

Over €11 million is to be spent on Galway city's roads and transportation this year, it has been revealed.

Galway City Council is to provide funds of €6.5 million, the Department of Transport will pay €4.1 million and the National Roads Authority will pay €916,000 into the investment package, which will cover almost 150 miles of road of which 120 miles are minor urban roads, 25 miles of regional roads and about 12 miles of primary and secondary roads.


Senior Council Engineer, Joe Tansey presented the Roads Programme to councillors, outlining where the monies would be spent during the year putting emphasis on making roads and footpaths safer.

Works include road resurfacing, road widening and footpath provision. According to Ciarán Hayes, Director of Services for Roads and Transportation, €75,000 is to be spent on fixing footpaths in the city centre area.

Maintainence also to be carried out this year includes the restoration of the Salmon Weir Bridge, in preparation for a pedestrian walkway alongside, and other general improvement works.

Sixty new bus shelters are to be erected between East and West bus routes.
