Company Withdraws Mayo Power Station Plans

An application for a 100-megawatt gas power station on the outskirts of Claremorris in County Mayo has been withdrawn following strong local opposition.

Monaghan-based Mountside Properties Ltd, the company behind the power station have announced the withdrawal of the application lodged with Mayo County Council.

A campaign against the power plant has been ongoing in the last few months, with local residents demanding the plans be halted due to health and safety fears.

Over the Christmas period, around 500 people attended a public meeting and plans were also well advanced to host a silent protest outside the planning office of Mayo County Council later this week.

A spokesperson for the council said the Mountside Properties Ltd did not give reasons for the application withdrawal.
