North Belfast Renewal Strategy Makes Good Process

The Executive's Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy is beginning to make a difference to the lives of people in disadvantaged areas, is the message from Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie.

The Minister made her comments today as she visited the Kinder Kids Centre which is run by the Ashton Community Trust in the New Lodge area of North Belfast. She spoke to local community representatives to hear about the problems faced by the local community and see for herself the work being done in relation to the regeneration of the area.


Good progress has been made in implementing the Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy. The Kinder Kids Children’s Centre which is run as a viable social enterprise provides over 70 childcare places and has created 18 jobs in the area. Other projects underway include community facilities, retail units and apartments among others.

Minister said: "My department has been to the fore in supporting Ashton Community Trust in leading regeneration activities in the Inner North Belfast Area. It has provided funding in excess of £500k over the past number of years. Ashton Community Trust is a shining example of what can be achieved when local communities are supported in tackling local issues."

The Minister noted the continuing community led work by the Ashton Community Trust and commended them in playing a dynamic role in regeneration in the area.
