Residents and commercial customers are being encouraged to recycle their cardboard at the seven recycling centres in the Borough, in order to reduce greenhouse gasses and meet Recycling targets.
Describing the card recycling facilities, Jonathan Bell, Chairman of the Council Services Committee said: "There are clearly designated skips for cardboard, but if people are not sure, they should ask the site attendant. It is also important that the contents are removed, as there have been several instances where hazardous materials, including syringes, have been concealed within boxes."
Continuing, he explained: "The diversion of cardboard from landfill is vital in order to help Ards Borough Council meet the stringent recycling targets. Cardboard, as we know, is a bio-degradable material, but when it breaks down in landfill it produces methane gas, which is an extremely potent greenhouse gas."
"I would encourage all residents and businesses in the Borough to continue to work with the Council in this important area." he added.
All cardboard boxes should be flattened and contents, including non-recyclable packaging such as polystyrene, bubble wrap and plastic, removed. Commercial customers must produce a valid waste ticket to dispose of cardboard at the sites. These are available from the council offices and the depot at North Road.
The seven recycling centres in Ards, open from 8am - 4.30 Mon-Fri and 8am - 4pm on Saturdays during the winter.
These are located at North Road, Newtownards, Moss Road, Ballygowan, Glen Link, Comber, Railway Street, Donaghadee, Parsonage Road, Kircubbin, Moss Road, Millisle, and Coach Road, Portaferry.
If anyone would like to know more about recycling or wants to order a blue or brown bin, contact Clive Catterson, Waste Awareness Officer on 028 9182 4024.
