Ruane Opens New Autism Unit For Children In Coalisland

A purpose-built support unit in Coalisland for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder has been opened by the Assembly Education Minister Caitriona Ruane.

Based within Primate Dixon Primary School, Coalisland, the unit will complement existing provision in the area and enable children with autism to participate in mainstream schooling.

The Education Minister said since taking office one of her biggest priorities has been to ensure a quality service for children with special needs.

"I want to congratulate all those involved with the support unit here at Primate Dixon. Centres such as these offer a supportive and enjoyable learning environment, enabling some of our most vulnerable children to access the education they deserve.

"The Building a Better Future Draft Budget for 2008 to 2011 gives a commitment to take forward the current review of Special Education Needs and meet the growing requirement in this area for improved, more consistent provision which makes the most effective use of resources available." the minister said.

The minister congratulated Primate Dixon on their work with children from the travelling community and those who speak English as an addtional language.

"I have found that the schools ethos is one of inclusion where diversity is celebrated and I would encourage everyone to continue their excellent work," added the minister.

Primate Dixon is situated at School Lane, Coalisland. In the 2006/07 school year, the school had an enrolment of 483 pupils.
