Tony Killeen has announced that over €700k will be allocated to Clare County Council to assist the local authority in maintaining and operating its water and wastewater treatment facilities.
"I am pleased that my colleague Mr John Gormley TD, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government has acknowledged the additional expenditure faced by Clare County Council in maintaining and operating such facilities," stated Minister Killeen.
Killeen confirmed that the allocation, under the Local Government Fund, has now been finalised and that Clare County Council will shortly receive payment of €26,500.
He continued: "In addition, Limerick City Council has been allocated funds in respect of the Limerick Main Drainage Scheme. The City Council has been instructed that €176,500 of this allocation should be offset against Clare County Council's liability on the Scheme. This will reduce the County Council's costs on wastewater services by a corresponding amount."
"Overall, therefore, Clare County Council is receiving special additional assistance of €703,000. This is an increase on the amount signalled in the preliminary announcement, made earlier this year, and will provide substantial support to the Council with the running costs of its new infrastructure," added Minister Killeen.
The Minister concluded that he was very much aware of the difficulties faced by Clare County Council and other local authorities throughout the country in meeting the significant costs of maintaining and operating water and wastewater treatment facilities.
