Major Development Planned For North Cork

A major 500 million euro investment, which will create 1,000 new jobs for Cork, has been unveiled.

Following consultation with Cork County Council, Greencore revealed the masterplan at the former Irish Sugar plant. Its ambitious MallowWest plan will be the biggest single-site mixed use development attempted in an Irish town.

Greencore ended almost 80 years of Irish production in May of last year. This decision to shut down the Mallow plant in north Cork came in the wake of Brussels changes to the EU sugar regime.

Around 300 jobs were lost with the closure, however Greencore has insisted MallowWest will create up to 1,000 job opportunities in various commercial, industrial and technology projects planned for the new development.

Cork County Council’s Special Local Area Plan (SLAP) has included the MallowWest project for the town and Greencore designers will now develop the outline blueprint for the regeneration project in consultation with council planners. When completed, a formal planning application will follow.
