Construction Employment Reaches ‘Pessimistic’ Level

A new jobs survey released for July has revealed employment expectations in the construction sector has hit an all-time low.

The FAS/ESRI report also showed that vacancies last month increased by five percentage points to 17 per cent.

Vacancies in the construction sector rose two percentage points to 10%, but the future outlook for the sector deteriorated to its most pessimistic level since the survey began in March 2002.


Management and quantity surveyors construction roles were highlighted as the most difficult to fill and in industry, it was engineers, sales personnel and managers.

The survey said: “Results for July 2007 reveal a further decline in employers’ employment expectations, maintaining a downward trend that began in May 2007.”
