Two significant water leaks on the Malahide Road in Marino, Dublin, have been successfully identified and repaired, utilities company Uisce Éireann has announced.

Working with their contractor GMC Utilities Group Ltd, Uisce Éireann carried out an extensive review of the water network under the Find & Fix scheme as part of its Leakage Reduction Programme.

As a result, the repaired leaks have saved 326,000 litres of water per day, conserving enough water to meet the needs of over 2,000 people.

Discussing the works, Declan Healy, Leakage Reduction Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "We have had some significant leak repairs on the Malahide Road in Marino in recent days. The first leak detected was losing 260,000 litres per day, while another leak was losing approximately 66,000 litres per day. By fixing these leaks, enough water was saved to supply almost 2,500 people a day."


Demand for treated water across the Greater Dublin Area has reached record levels this year, putting severe strain on water supplies serving communities in Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow and Meath.

Uisce Éireann has a number of initiatives underway to help manage this demand, including the Leakage Reduction Programme and other conservation measures, as well as ongoing capital upgrades to water infrastructure. The longer term solution is the development of a new water source, from the Lower Shannon, which is being progressed as part of the Water Supply Project Eastern & Midlands Region.
