Contracts to develop an active travel improvement scheme in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown (dlr) have been signed by the County Council, the National Transport Authority (NTA) and civil engineering company Clonmel Enterprises.
The dlr Central Active Travel Improvement Scheme proposes to upgrade existing footpaths, introduce new cycle infrastructure and improve public realm along Kill Avenue, Mounttown Road Lower, Mounttown Road Upper and Glenageary Road Upper.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve transportation options and infrastructure in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area, with a focus on sustainability and accessibility for all members of the community.
The scheme will also deliver upon: Enhancing safety for all ages and abilities; Promoting a modal shift from private vehicle to walking, cycling and public transport; Enhancing permeability and creating a place for all ages and abilities; Improving priority for buses along Kill Avenue; and protecting and enhancing sensitive landscapes.
At the contract signing An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Councillor Jim O'Leary, highlighted the benefits of the scheme.
"The provision of segregated active travel infrastructure is fundamental to encouraging modal shift and will enhance safety for all ages and abilities," he said.
"This scheme not only provides these facilities but also includes expansive public realm improvements in new planting, incidental play and sustainable drainage systems."
Finola O'Driscoll, Senior Programme Manager, National Transport Authority, added: "This is an important scheme as part of the overarching active travel network in dlr as it connects to the recently completed Glenageary Road Upper and Deansgrange Cycle Schemes.
"It will also provide future connections to the dlr Connector and Rochestown Avenue projects. The combination of these schemes will complete a functioning active travel network in the east side of the county, and the dlr Central Active Travel Improvement Scheme is a significant step towards this."
