Labour Focuses On Dublin's Housing In New Vision Plan

Construction News Image
Labour has focused on providing more affordable housing to help revitalise Ireland's capital as part of the party's 'Vision for Dublin'.

Labour MEP Aodhán Ó Ríordáin was joined by party candidates from across the city to highlight their plans which also focussed on public transport, safer communities and the public services which Dublin needs.

Mr Ó Ríordáin said: "When Dublin thrives, the entire country benefits. When I ran for Europe I did so for the love of Dublin. Our city has been neglected by Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil for too long. They don’t have the ambition to deliver what our city needs.

"For eight years they failed to deliver a directly elected Mayor or the level of housing needed for thriving communities. They talk now about putting more Gardaí on our streets but after four wasted years their pledges carry little weight. A year on from the riots that scared the city centre little has improved.

"We can point to the redevelopment of the Docklands, the completion of Luas Cross City and the rollout of Dublin Bikes as projects Labour drove and delivered. Now we want to see initiatives like a food market network, a new artists quarter, and new homes in the inner city core."

He continued: "Labour has put forward a range of transformational ideas and initiatives that we believe can revitalise and regenerate our city, but it means giving our local councils new powers and conceding power to a new Mayor.

"To deliver such projects Councillors need powers to raise more money like a hotel bed tax that would allow them to improve our streets and public realm. Waste management is a major problem."

Meanwhile, Labour Senator, Marie Sherlock, added: "We will provide new spaces for artists so that our city centres are not cultural wastelands and ensure our proposed State Construction Company takes on the take of regeneration by assembling brownfield plots for new housing, and resource local authorities to regenerate areas like the North Georgian core as homes."
