Galway Housing Development Shortlisted For Award

A purpose-built Galway housing development for older people was recently shortlisted at the National Age Friendly Recognition and Achievement Awards.

The development, An Cliathán, a collaborative project between OCC Construction and Galway City Council, had already been recognised this year at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards 2024, where OCC Construction won best project in the 'Residential up to €5M' category.

This time around, at the awards which were held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dublin, the development received a nomination in the Housing category.

The Age Friendly Recognition and Achievement Awards, organised by the Age Friendly Ireland programme, celebrate initiatives and projects that make a positive difference in communities by ensuring older people can live active, healthy and independent lives.

An Cliathán integrates modern design with principles of accessibility and sustainability, ensuring that residents enjoy high-quality living spaces that support aging in place.

The development includes features such as barrier-free entrances, accessible transport links, communal spaces and a focus on green areas—all of which promote active lifestyles and community engagement.

An Cliathán was designed with input from the local authority and the community, ensuring that it meets the evolving needs of its residents.

In addition to its focus on accessibility, An Cliathán is also a sustainable, energy-efficient development that aligns with Galway City's broader goals of creating resilient, climate-smart communities for the future.

Deputy Mayor of Galway City, Cllr Níall McNelis, said: "I am proud that Galway City Council was shortlisted for this award.

"The collaboration between OCC Construction and Galway City Council and the Design Team produced a high-quality development that provides much-needed housing units in Galway City. It is a great step forward in the Galway City Council Housing Delivery Action Plan 2022-2026."
