The Irish government has announced new housing targets, pledging to deliver 303,000 homes from 2025 to 2030.
The plan, averaging over 50,000 new homes per year, includes a pathway to achieve an annual delivery rate of 60,000 homes by 2030, responding to Ireland's expanding population and persistent housing demand.
The revised targets were confirmed as the government also approved draft amendments to the National Planning Framework (NPF), following a public consultation period between July and September 2024. The updated NPF, expected to be published in the coming days, reflects feedback from stakeholders and provides a roadmap to address housing needs tied to both population and employment growth, exceeding projections from the 2018 NPF.
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O'Brien, said that the updated targets align with recent Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) forecasts, which highlight significant population increases over the coming decade. The government's plan outlines a phased approach, with housing delivery starting at 41,000 homes annually in 2025 and gradually increasing to meet the 2030 target.
