The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has released its latest figures on residential construction starts, indicating a significant surge in activity.
September 2024 saw a remarkable increase of 356.7% in commencements compared to the same period in 2023. A total of 11,385 homes were commenced in September 2024, compared to 2,607 in the previous year.
This substantial uptick can be attributed to the introduction of the Uisce Éireann water and wastewater connection charge rebate in April 2023. The rebate, designed to incentivise development, has accelerated project timelines and made more projects financially viable.
Over the first nine months of 2024, 49,007 homes were commenced, representing a 105% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This translates to an average of 259 homes commenced each working day.
In the past 12 months, a total of 57,885 units were commenced, marking a 93% increase compared to the previous 12-month period.
These figures highlight the positive impact of government initiatives and the strong momentum in Ireland's housing construction sector.
