Construction News Image
Construction has officially begun on a new, state-of-the-art visitor amenity building at the renowned Tyrella Beach. The project, led by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and executed by Bell Contracts, aims to enhance the visitor experience at this popular Blue Flag beach.

The new facility will offer modern amenities, including:

• Modern toilet and changing facilities

• Fully equipped 'Changing Places' toilet

• Accessible restroom

• Outdoor showers

• Solar-powered electricity

In addition to these improvements, the existing beach building and storage container will be removed, allowing the area to return to its natural dune habitat.

Tyrella Beach, a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike, is renowned for its two kilometres of pristine sandy shores and stunning dune landscape. Its consistent Blue Flag status since 1997 is a testament to its exceptional quality and management. As a designated Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI), the beach and dunes also hold significant ecological value.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Byrne said: "I am delighted to mark the start of construction works at Tyrella Beach. This new amenity building will provide both locals and visitors with a high-quality, sustainable and accessible facility that will enhance the outdoor experience at this picturesque and award-winning location.

Cllr Byrne continued: "Tyrella Beach is a unique asset within the Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark. The dunes are home to a diverse range of local flora and fauna whilst the expansive sandy beach and clean waters are perfect for a wide range of family-friendly outdoor activities. The new building will further enhance the visitor experience and I encourage all to come and enjoy this enhanced facility when it opens in the Summer of 2025."
