Uisce Éireann, Ireland's national water utility, has completed a major upgrade to the water supply network in the Carnatreantagh and Church Hill areas of Donegal. The project involved the replacement of over 2 kilometres of aging water mains with modern, durable pipes.
The works, which commenced in late May and concluded in October, were undertaken by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann. The investment is part of Uisce Éireann's national Leakage Reduction Programme (LRP), aimed at reducing water loss and improving water supply reliability.
To facilitate the safe and efficient execution of the works, temporary road closures were implemented along a section of the L-1522. Uisce Éireann expresses its gratitude to the local community for their understanding and cooperation during this period.
In addition to replacing the ageing water mains, the project included the installation of new water service connections from the public water main to individual properties. This comprehensive approach will enhance the overall water supply reliability and reduce the risk of leaks and disruptions.
The successful completion of these works will significantly benefit the local community by minimising water loss, improving water quality, and ensuring a more reliable water supply for years to come.
Patricia Lowry, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said that customers in the Carnatreantagh and Church Hill areas can be assured of a more reliable water supply as a result of the successful works.
"We wish to extend our thanks to the local communities for their patience and cooperation while these essential leakage repair works were carried out," said Patricia. "The works have reduced the volume of drinking water lost into the ground before ever reaching customers' taps and will allow for a more reliable and secure water supply for customers in the region."
Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030.
Fixing leaks and replacing aging pipes can be a complicated process but Uisce Éireann is making significant progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%; by the end of 2022 it stood at 37%. We are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030.
