ESB's Venture Innovation Team, X_Site, and Granular Energy have completed the first phase of a pilot integration, enabling hourly matched green energy certificates (GOOs) feasible for sample commercial customers.
To meet climate targets, large companies are increasingly demanding guarantees of green energy from their suppliers before making a switch. These guarantees, in the form of green energy certificates, are typically matched on an annual or monthly basis, making accurate reporting of green energy usage challenging for both energy companies and their customers.
In this pilot, data from ESB's Carnsore wind farm was matched to test customers' hourly consumption, proving that accurate and immediate reporting is feasible. Partnering with Granular Energy—winners of the 2023 ESB-supported Free Electrons global accelerator program—the pilot explores a new platform for GOO certificates, benefiting both ESB's customers and internal trading teams.
Geraldine Moloney, Head of New Ventures at ESB, stated: "We are committed to making it easier for commercial customers to track their green energy reporting – a crucial step for many in meeting important climate targets – and this innovative project demonstrates our continued commitment to finding innovative solutions to enable the delivery of such solutions. We are delighted with the results of our pilot with Granular Energy into the future and I am excited to see how this can help support the delivery of our own Net Zero by 2040 strategy."
Toby Ferenczi, CEO at Granular Energy, said: "ESB is one of the world’s most innovative energy utilities. We’re excited to work on this project because we believe it could play a part in resolving some of the key challenges facing the Irish energy system, such as how to meet the growing demand for electricity from industries such as data centres or green hydrogen without this leading to an increase in carbon-emissions."
