Almac Group has announced that it is now sourcing electricity from a newly constructed wind farm in County Tyrone.

The company, which is based in Craigavon, has said the Murley wind farm will help it cut emissions from electricity consumed at its HQ by over 95 per cent. Almac has signed a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement to procure electricity generated from the site.

Executive director Niall Harkin said: "We are delighted that this project is now operational and that our Craigavon site is now being powered with fully certified electricity from renewable energy. This project is a crucial step on our journey to net zero and will significantly reduce carbon emissions from the electricity we consume. I am hugely encouraged by the progress that we are making on our climate journey and proud to mark this significant milestone we announce today."

Almac's Craigavon site, which employs over 4,000 of its 7,000 global workforce, plays a crucial role in supporting pharma and biotech companies in their drug development processes. The Murley wind farm, owned by NTR Renewable Energy Income Fund II, features six turbines and generates 21.6MW of power.

Almac Group revenue in 2023 increased by 14 per cent on 2022's figure of £840 million, with the business posting sales of £958m in the year to September 2023.

Its financial results also revealed a rise in operating profit, with final pre-tax profits recorded at £93.8m, down 3.3 per cent on the previous year's figure of £97m due to a significant exchange rate adjustment.
