100,000+ Rooftop Solar Microgenerators Now Powering Ireland's Electricity Grid

Construction News Image
ESB Networks has announced that over 100,000 rooftop solar microgenerators are now connected to Ireland's electricity grid.

This significant milestone is testament to the consumer appetite for zero carbon energy and helps Ireland on its trajectory towards Net Zero. With 20 percent of Microgeneration connections delivered in the past six months, ESB Networks is continuing to progress applications at a rate of 750 per week.

Minister for Climate, Eamon Ryan TD said: "The announcement really demonstrates that the potential of solar power in Ireland is being realised in communities right across the country - the future is bright. Hundreds of homes are going solar each week, generating power that they can use themselves and selling excess energy into the grid. This rooftop revolution will continue to play a crucial part in creating an Ireland powered by renewable energy and through microgeneration, the power is with individuals. Following the recent announcement that one Giga Watt of solar PV is now energised on Ireland’s electricity network, the addition of 400MW of clean energy to Ireland’s power system is another step in Ireland’s journey to 8GW of solar connections by 2030."

Nicholas Tarrant, Managing Director at ESB Networks said: "The delivery of 100,000 rooftop solar renewable generator connections is significant, as it is testament to customers choosing to significantly reduce their carbon footprint and help displace the use of imported fossil fuels. Furthermore, customers can receive payments from their electricity supplier for any excess energy sold back to the network. Solar energy is Ireland’s fastest growing renewable power source, and the 400MW of microgeneration complements a further 800MW of larger scale solar connected in recent years. At ESB Networks we are consistently supporting all electricity customers as we move together towards a clean electric future."
