NI Water To Upgrade Victoria Market Car Park Pumping Station

Construction News Image
NI Water will begin another phase of investment aimed at improving the infrastructure in L'Derry, with a million-pound upgrade planned for the Victoria Market Car Park Wastewater Pumping Station.

Scheduled to commence towards the end of July, the project will involve refurbishing the 15-year-old pumping station located beneath a section of the council-owned Victoria Market Car Park, situated off Queen's Quay in the city.

Speaking about the work, NI Water Project Manager, Matthew Lundy said: "Victoria Market Car Park Wastewater Pumping Station is an integral part of our wastewater network and helps to protect the area against out-of-sewer flooding. The work scheduled to be undertaken will include the refurbishment or replacement of the six large pumps and other equipment to ensure that the pumping station continues to operate effectively.

"Site set up will get underway in the car park week commencing Monday 22nd July - subject to a licence being granted from the Council - with work starting around the end of July. Each pump will be replaced or refurbished in turn to ensure that the pumping station remains operational. As a result of this essential sequencing, work will be ongoing until around the end of November 2024.

"Due to the scale of the equipment that needs to be removed and replaced a mobile crane will be required on site. For this reason, our contractor BSG will have to section off around 28 of the 81 spaces within the car park to facilitate the work. Signage will be erected in the car park and social media posts issued to notify the public.

"NI Water would take this opportunity to thank Derry City & Strabane District Council for their support in progressing this important work. In advance of work getting underway, and together with our project team from McAdam and BSG, we also thank the public for their patience and cooperation while work is ongoing. We will endeavour to complete this upgrade in the shortest possible timescale."
