The Diamond In Donegal Town To Reopen After Refurbishment Works

Construction News Image
The Diamond in Donegal Town is to reopen to the public today following an extensive regeneration project.

The reopening is partial, with only one small section of paving scheduled for completion in July 2024. The project includes the refurbishment of the Diamond area, including new seating, paving, lighting, and planting. Additionally, it introduces a new community canopy and entertainment space intended for use by the community, businesses, individuals and other groups.

A key aspect of the project has been the creation of an inclusive, accessible and inviting pedestrian space at the heart of the historic Diamond, catering to both locals and visitors. To achieve this goal, the Council has designated the central area of the Diamond, where new public realm improvements have been implemented, as a pedestrian-only zone.

These works have been funded under the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media’s Outdoor Public Space Scheme under Project Ireland 2040 along with co-funding from Donegal County Council. Local architectural firm, Paul Doherty Architects Ltd., led out on the new design of the space while the main contractors were Dungloe based Axis Construction Ltd.

Consequently, no cars, vans, motorbikes, or any other motorised vehicles will be permitted in the central area of the Diamond. The Council kindly requests the cooperation of all users in adhering to this directive, emphasising health and safety considerations and aiming to maximise enjoyment of the space for everyone. Alternative parking facilities are available nearby in designated car parks for the convenience of all vehicle users.
