A €1.2 million upgrade project at Fermoy Swimming Pool has been completed which will improve the energy performance of the facility.
Funded by a €271,000 SEAI grant, the project included installing 170 Solar PV panels, a new insulated roof, upgraded heating with two heat pumps instead of the old geothermal unit, new Air Handling Units, replacing the hot water gas boiler for showers, triple-glazed windows and doors, and painting the complex exterior.
Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Frank Flynn said: "The enhanced facilities at Fermoy Swimming Pool will benefit the entire community, providing a safe and energy-efficient environment for swimmers of all ages. With approximately 3,043 weekly visitors and 158,267 swimmers annually, the pool plays a vital role in promoting social participation in swimming. The upgraded facilities will cater to many groups, including schools, clubs, and wellness groups, and will continue to serve as a hub for community activities year-round. These energy saving interventions will ensure that the pool continues to serve the population of Fermoy and its surrounding hinterland for many more generations."
Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Valerie O’Sullivan, stated:
"The upgrades at Fermoy Swimming Pool align with the Fermoy Town Development Plan while also meeting the specific energy requirements of a sports complex, improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in line with national decarbonisation goals. We are proud to offer these upgraded facilities that will serve the residents of Fermoy and surrounding areas for years to come."
First built in the 1970s and renovated in 1996, Fermoy Swimming Pool caters to more than 150,000 visitors each year. It offers weekly swimming lessons to over 950 children and serves as the base for Fermoy Swimming Club. The pool hosts various swimming events and is a primary venue for school swimming lessons. Additionally, the staff run a Swimming Learning Programme for both adults and children. Local organizations such as Blackwater Triathlon Club, Fermoy Rowing Club, Blackwater Sub Aqua Club, and many others also use the facility.
