County Down headquartered, GRAHAM has announced that work is underway to deliver Milton Keynes' first regeneration project on the Lakes Estate in Bletchley.
GRAHAM who was appointed under a two-stage tender using the Pagabo major works framework has started work to build almost 200 new council homes, a nursery, community centre and retail space. Some public realm work has been completed with four new play parks and improved courtyards.
The new homes will give Serpentine Court residents high-quality, energy-efficient homes, along with other people waiting for a new council home. The plans are aimed at renewing the Lakes Estate, giving local people a greater sense of belonging and pride in their area.
In March 2022, proposals for the Lakes Estate were given planning permission, following extensive engagement with the local community which first began in 2017. In a ballot the following year, 93 per cent of voters sought to demolish Serpentine Court and redevelop the estate.
The project is being funded by the city council's investment of almost £70 million and is being topped up by a grant of just under £15 million from Homes England.
Cabinet Member for Adults, Housing and Healthy Communities, Cllr Emily Darlington, said: "This is a really proud moment for the community. The Lakes Estate is the biggest project in our history and a perfect example of how the community can work with the local council to deliver positive change. Residents are seeing their hard work and dedication turn into reality. I thank everyone for their involvement so far on this vital project which will deliver better life opportunities for generations to come."
Jonathan Hall, Managing Director of Building South at GRAHAM, said: "This sod-cutting ceremony marks a landmark moment in the rejuvenation of the Lakes Estate. GRAHAM is delighted to be on site and look forward to building new homes and facilities that will enhance the wellbeing and vitality for the residents and local community. We have significant experience delivering residential developments, having established a strong reputation for high-quality construction. I know our team will work hard to successfully deliver this significant regeneration project for Milton Keynes."
