SDLP South Down MLA, Colin McGrath, has welcomed funding to progress work on Narrow Water Bridge which will connect Warrenpoint to the Cooley Peninsula in Louth.
The Irish Government announced funding through the Shared Island Unit yesterday, 20 February. Mr McGrath said the funding will allow progress to be made on plans which have been "in the works for some time".
The South Down MLA has said that a "sense of urgency" is needed from Infrastructure Minister, John O'Dowd for works to begin on this bridge.
In a statement, Mr McGrath said:
"The SDLP in government were key to securing progress on this vital infrastructure project that will connect communities on both sides of the border.
"This bridge will create a range of opportunities for people in South Down and Co Louth. It will not only make it much easier for people travelling between the two areas, but will also open up new possibilities around tourism in the area, with scope for new businesses and investment bringing jobs and other economic benefits.
"This project would not have been possible without the work of community activists, who have driven this matter over the years. They deserve credit for their perseverance in ensuring that we were able to get to this stage. I also acknowledge the work of my predecessors PJ and Sinead Bradley who always championed this project.
"We now need to see a sense of urgency from Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd to see work begin on this bridge. The Irish government have stepped up with this funding, but they can’t deliver this project on their own. I will continue to work with all interested parties to see Narrow Water Bridge built with all the benefits it will bring to people living in both areas."
