Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Mr Patrick O'Donovan, TD, has announced the approval of funding for minor flood mitigation works in Waterford, Galway and Wexford.
The funding was approved under the Office of Public Works' Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.
In Waterford €19,207 was approved to conduct a study into erosion in Ardmore. Curragh and Ballyquin were included in the study due to their proximity to Ardmore. The study investigated the impact on Curragh and Ballyquin on erosion or flood protection measures constructed in Ardmore. The additional cost was due to the requirement of additional analysis required from the Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre UCC. The aim of this study was to develop an appropriate plan to best manage the risks identified to human health, the environment, cultural heritage and economic activity. The study provides information on erosion, flood patterns and the effects of coastal and flood protection measures.
In Galway, €135,000 of funding was approved for proposed works at Mountbellew Lake, Ballinasloe. Included in the works is a consulting engineers report which provides a design for the repair of the embankment breach and sluice gate failure, and to address any hydraulic or fish pass barrier issues, and the employment of a contractor to undertake the design works.
In order to install a new pipe to replace the old stone culvert at Castlefarm, Dunmore €34,020 was approved.
Also, €18,000 was allocated for proposed works at Roo, Tiernevin, Gort, which include upgrade of embankment, installation of toe drain, sump and pump, non-return valve on foul water line and divert road run-off
In Wexford, €30,742 for proposed works at Growtown Upper Barntown was approved. These works include the removal of the existing wall in front of the house, construction of a new solid block wall removing the pedestrian and vehicle access from the front of the property, provision of new pedestrian access from the local road above the flood line of the house, and other ancillary works.
Funding of €25,870 was approved for proposed works at Badgers Hill which include removal of the access to the property and continue the bund/ditch already around the property passed the lowest point. Create a new entrance on the higher section of the road to prevent the risk of flooding from The Pill River.
