Kildare County Council has proposed the development of the Sallins Grand Canal Greenway Link.
The proposed development will rectify existing infrastructure deficiencies between Phase One and Phase Two of the Grand Canal Greenway through the provision of pedestrian and cycle facilities.
This development also aims to improve greenway user connectivity to the town of Sallins, increasing footfall along Main Street and in central commercial areas. The proposed active travel facilities will also link existing footpaths and cycle lanes along the R407 directly to Sallins GAA grounds and St Laurence's Catholic National School on the southern side of the proposed Sallins pedestrian bridge.
Works will include improvements to the existing pedestrian and cycle infrastructure on the R407, the removal of existing vehicular ramp and provision of pedestrian/cyclist only ramp.
The pedestrian ramp will have a smaller footprint which will provide safe access for pedestrian and cyclists from Canal View to the proposed crossing point on the R407. Car parking spaces along Canal View will be removed in order to facilitate shared space and improve safety conditions for vulnerable road users.
A vehicular ramp at R407 junction with Church Avenue will be closed to remove a dangerous conflict collision zone between vulnerable road users and motorised vehicles and make permanent the temporary closure of western end of Church Avenue
A copy of the proposed development will be available during normal opening times at Kildare County Council from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday for a period of six weeks from 10 January to 22 February 2024.
