NI Public Raises 'Deep Concern' Over Plastic Waste

Construction News Image
A recent poll has highlighted that 75% of people in Northern Ireland are concerned about plastic waste on a global scale.

Commissioned by international development agency Tearfund the poll revealed 86% of responders felt governments needed to take either a large or very large responsibility for tackling plastic waste.

Kate Nicholl MLA, Chair of the All-Party Group on Climate Action, said this new poll demonstrates that there is "deep concern" amongst the Northern Irish public about the rampant nature of global plastic pollution, as well as a desire to solve the problem.

She said: "The results of this polling indicate a strong desire from the Northern Irish public to tackle the scourge of plastic waste. As policymakers, we must do everything we can to reduce the amount of plastic in society that is being produced.

"Plastic pollution is a significant threat multiplier when it comes to flood risks. In the developing world, the extent of plastic-aggravated flooding is incredibly worrying, and the associated health impacts are serious. In light of these concerns, almost 150 governments will be meeting during 2023 and 2024 to work on developing the first-ever global treaty on plastic pollution.

"I'm glad to support Tearfund in this campaign to push for effective outcomes in the treaty. I will be writing to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to raise my concerns and advocate for a positive outcome in the treaty negotiations."
