Uisce Éireann and Wexford County Council are working together to deliver the project, which will provide improved water quality for the community and safeguard the water supply for generations to come.
The completed upgrade will modernise and improve the water treatment process at the plant, ensuring raw water is treated to the highest of water quality standards as required by the European Union Council Directive. The project will also benefit over 26,000 customers, ensuring the continued delivery of clean, safe drinking water to the town.
The upgrades will modernise the existing facilities and significantly improve drinking water quality, reliability and resilience of the water supply serving Wexford Town as well as greatly reducing the risk of any future boil water notices. The works will also help facilitate the removal of the Wexford Town Water Supply Scheme from the EPA's list of 'at risk' supplies from the Remedial Action List (RAL).

Speaking about the project, Programme Manager for Uisce Éireann, Ian O'Neill said: "Uisce Éireann is delighted to be investing in this significant and essential project for the people of Wexford Town. This important upgrade is required to ensure continued compliance with drinking water regulations and reduce the risk of water quality issues in the future.
"The upgrade works carried out as part of this project will also ensure the continued delivery of safe, clean drinking water to residents and businesses in Wexford Town and the surrounding area. We look forward to working with the local community as we continue to invest in the town's future."
As part of the upgrade at the Newtown Water Treatment Plant, Uisce Éireann will include enhanced coagulation, flocculation and clarification (CFC) processes, filter upgrade works to a dual media and run-to-waste facilities, electrical upgrade works. The upgrade works will include the provision of a new standby generator and upgrades to instrumentation, control and automation Health and Safety upgrades.
The works will be carried out by Glan Agua on behalf of Uisce Éireann, and are expected to be completed by late 2024.
