The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman Stephen Ross, said: "The oak tree, known for its longevity and resilience, is a fitting symbol for the Macmillan Unit's patients, who are facing challenging health issues. I was delighted to be invited and to learn more about the incredible support and services of Macmillan. Nicola McAleese, the Macmillan Volunteer Coordinator, added: "This powerful emblem represents the resilience and fortitude of those who have been affected by cancer and other terminal illnesses, reminding them of the hope that they possess. We fully appreciate the importance of planting trees, not only for the health of our planet but also for the well-being of our patients. Connecting with nature can have a positive impact on their mental and physical health."
As the tree planting season draws to a close, the Macmillan Cancer Unit at Antrim Area Hospital along with over 40 schools and community groups throughout the Borough have planted oak trees on their premises in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II. This initiative is part of the Queen's Green Canopy project, aimed at encouraging tree planting to celebrate Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee.
