RTÉ Nationwide Programme Highlights Dereliction And Vacancy

Construction News Image
RTÉ's new Nationwide programme has shined a spotlight on a number of properties facing dereliction and vacancy.

Limerick City and County Council featured on the show, where some properties in the county that have been returned to use were showcased.

Gordon Daly, Director of Services, Community, Tourism and Culture said: "Making better use of our vacant and derelict building stock helps with the physical regeneration of our city, towns and villages but equally important it breathes new life into our communities including sustaining schools, shops and community and sporting organisations all of which contributes to enhancing the quality of life for existing and new residents."

The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant will support a homeowner with up to €50,000 grant aid to make a vacant or derelict property their principle private residence.

Even a property that had a prior commercial use can be supported to become residential.

The Repair and Lease Scheme can enable a property owner to avail of a capital loan up to €60,000 to renovate a vacant property and lease it to the Council for social housing, subject to suitability and demand.

Vacant commercial property may also be considered for support.

The Rural Regeneration and Development Fund has enabled the Council to acquire and de-risk property where there has been market failure.

Nationwide was broadcast on RTÉ One on Monday 20 March at 7pm.
